WHAT WE DO

We work closely with tilapia farmers and local partners to understand their biggest challenges.

Using research and evidence, we identify the most cost-effective and practical solutions that deliver measurable results: reduced feed costs, faster growth rates, lower veterinary expenses, and higher-quality fish that command better market prices.

WHY WE DO IT

Fish are the most farmed animal in Ghana, with about 200 million produced each year¹.

They provide 60% of the animal protein in Ghanaian’s diet, making aquaculture essential for both farmer livelihoods and national food security². Ghana has the fastest-growing tilapia and aquaculture sectors in Africa, with ambitious plans to increase production by 75% between 2024 and 2027¹𝄒³.

We’re here to help farmers meet this growing demand by helping them achieve efficient and sustainable operations. Healthy fish are productive fish – they grow faster, require less medication, and produce less waste. This means better returns for farmers and safer, more nutritious food for Ghanaian families.

Our Team

    Naveeth Basheer

    Founder and Executive Director

    Naveeth has a Master's in Civil Engineering from Imperial College London. Through nearly a decade of experience, mainly in fast-paced tech startups, he honed his expertise in strategy development and effective implementation.

    By building strong connections with Ghanaian experts, he recognised the immense potential in Ghana's growing aquaculture sector and is committed to supporting farmers through collaborative, evidence-based approaches.

    Kwaku Appiah Duodu

    Aquaculture Specialist

    Kwaku has a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). As an aquatic veterinarian with Ghana's Fisheries Commission, he has contributed to key national policies, led disease surveillance programs, developed biosecurity plans for farms, and trained extension officers in fish health management across Ghana. He provides extensive expertise and experience at AWASH.

    Moritz Stumpe

    Interim Executive Director, Animal Advocacy Africa (AAA)

    Moritz is a generalist with a focus on data and research. He has worked in the private, public, and non-profit sectors. Through AAA, he has helped launch and provided strategic advice for several effective charities focused on improving animal welfare on the continent.

    In 2023, he went through Charity Entrepreneurship's Research Training Program. He holds a Master’s in International Relations and a Bachelor’s in International Business Studies.

    Emmanuel Awuni

    Founder and Executive Director, SHARED Africa

    Emmanuel is a physiotherapy professional with nearly half a decade of clinical experience. His discovery of Effective Altruism led him to pursue a greater impact beyond healthcare. 

    Emmanuel launched SHARED Africa, which looks to introduce policies designed to reduce animal suffering, improve human health outcomes, and protect the environment through collaborative and holistic solutions.

I founded AWASH to support Ghana’s tilapia farmers with practical, evidence-based solutions. By improving fish welfare, we can strengthen farmer livelihoods, protect the health of Ghanaian families, and drive sustainability for the entire aquaculture sector.
